Yet Lady Denham underestimated how well-regarded Miss Lambe is by the people of Sanditon, and they joined her in refusing to eat Lady Denham's cake, which humiliated her.
Lady Denham has never hidden her racist tendencies towards Georgiana but, in Sanditon season 2, episode 4, Lady Denham made a point of ordering a gigantic layer cake and a vast assortment of sweets to mock Georgiana and her sugar boycott. Of course, Heyrick's efforts were met with pushback, just as Lady Denham scorns Miss Lambe's boycott. Heyrick's campaign included the distribution of booklet-like pamphlets similar to the ones Georgiana hands out in Sanditon. Heyrick's campaign called for ordinary Britons to boycott sugar and for grocers not to carry it. From her position of wealth and privilege, Heyrick was contemptuous of Parliament abolitionists who were too eager to appease wealthy slaveowners.
In real life, a woman named Elizabeth Heyrick began the sugar boycott to protest slavery in the West Indies, where virtually all of the sugar consumed by Western Europe was produced by large plantations. Miss Lambe cited this to Lady Denham (Anne Reid) when she began her sugar boycott in Sanditon, which is drawing from real history just like HBO's 1882-set The Gilded Age does. By Sanditon's 1820 timeframe, people were still permitted to own slaves in the British colonies despite the banning of the British Atlantic slave trade in 1807. The sugar boycott actually happened in real life. In Sanditon season 2, Georgiana began a sugar boycott to protest the continuation of slavery in Antigua and the West Indies. Miss Lambe's care passed to Sidney's older brother Tom Parker (Kris Marshall) and his wife Mary (Kate Ashfield), though Georgiana lives with Mr. In the interim between Sanditon seasons 1 and 2, Sidney returned to Antigua to settle Georgiana's affairs but he tragically died from yellow fever. Nevertheless, Sidney brought Georgiana to Sanditon. Parker brought Miss Lambe to England but she resented her caretaker's domineering attitude and yearned to be free to make her own life choices. Born in Antigua, Georgiana became Sidney's ward after the death of her parents. But Georgiana's backstory is also crucial to Sanditon.
As such, Miss Lambe is a prime target for every fortune-hunting man who wants to marry her for her money. Georgiana is the richest person in Sanditon thanks to her personal fortune of 100,000 pounds.
